What is endodontics?

Endodontics is the specialized discipline of dentistry that focuses on the treatment and management of complex conditions within the tooth. It involves identifying and treating pulp lesions, such as extensive caries or dental trauma, to prevent tooth loss and reduce patient discomfort.
Endodontic procedures, such as root canal therapy, are a crucial part of the process of saving affected teeth, ensuring the elimination of infection and restoration of the structural integrity of the tooth.
Through the evolution of technology in the field of endodontics, root canal treatments can have a success rate close to 100%.

What are the stages of root canal treatment?

Endodontic treatment follows a series of well-defined steps to ensure long-term success:

  1. Consultation and diagnosis: The specialist doctor performs a clinical and radiological evaluation to determine the condition of the dental pulp.

  2. Local anesthesia: Patient comfort is ensured by using anesthesia so that the intervention is completely painless.

  3. Isolation of the surgical field: A dental dam is used to isolate the treated tooth and prevent bacterial contamination.

  4. Access to the pulp chamber: An access path is created to the pulp chamber and root canals.

  5. Removal of affected pulp tissue: The compromised dental pulp is removed using special instruments.

  6. Canal shaping and disinfection: The root canals are cleaned, widened, and disinfected to remove bacteria and organic debris.

  7. Canal obturation: After disinfection, the canals are sealed with a biocompatible material to prevent reinfection.

  8. Tooth reconstruction: The treated tooth is reconstructed with a filling or a dental crown to restore its functionality and aesthetics.

When is it necessary to remove (extirpate) the dental nerve?

Removal of the dental nerve becomes necessary when the dental pulp is irreversibly damaged. This can occur due to deep cavities, dental trauma, cracks or fractures that expose the nerve to bacteria.
Symptoms such as intense pain, prolonged sensitivity to cold or heat, gingival edema, or the appearance of dental abscesses are signals that the dental nerve is compromised and requires endodontic intervention.
The goal of this procedure is to eliminate pain, prevent the spread of infection, and save the natural tooth.

How many sessions can endodontic treatment be performed?

At Dental Sense, root canal treatment is performed in a single session, using specialized instruments such as Endomotor, Apex Finder (apical locator), endodontic irrigators and obturation systems, all under the magnification of dental loupes. This fast and efficient approach allows for the saving of affected teeth and their maintenance in the arch, thus avoiding the need for extraction. By preserving the natural tooth, the subsequent need for dental implants or other prosthetic solutions is eliminated, reducing the costs and time invested in additional treatments.

How much does a root canal treatment cost?

The cost of endodontic treatment depends on several factors, such as: the number of root canals, the complexity of the case, the technology used, and the need for coronal reconstruction.
